A Voyage to the Velvet Sun Band Pop Indonesia
The sultry and soulful voice of Jakarta-born Anggun is a force to be reckoned with in the Indonesian music scene.
Known for her songwriting prowess. Anggun has made it big outside of the region with a slew of hit albums and is a much-loved judge on various talent shows. Her songs are infectious and her presence on stage is electric.
The legendary Kahitna band was formed in 1990 and is considered. an icon in the Indonesian pop music industry. Its members include Ari Lasso, Wawan Juniarso, Once Mekel and Oncy Suryadi.
They have been nominated and won numerous awards throughout their career. They have also collaborated with other artists like Krisdayanti. Rita Effendy and Titi DJ. In a time when globalization is bringing the world together. the band has refused to be labeled as Indonesian-only pop.
Though they have a tendency to borrow elements from their favorite Western records. they never sound like knockoffs. It is as if they carefully scraped the best bits off their favorite singles and then reworked them with perfect confidence.
A Voyage to the Velvet Sun is an album chock-full of whimsical instrumentations. ’50s to ’60s throwback pop flourishes and a dose of seventh and suspended chords.
This debut – and so far only – album is a symphony of sweet-tasting sounds that Indonesian pop listeners lap up so willingly.
Whisperdesire Band Pop Indonesia
The Jakarta-based band Whisperdesire was active. in Indonesia’s ’90s-’00s indie pop scene and were one of the first bands to push shoegaze into the country.
In 2004, they released their debut EP Berakhir dan Cerah Berawan on Nanaba Records. which is now out of print. The reissue is an opportunity to rediscover their music. which blends their own take on ’80s-style indie pop with influences from rock and roll classics like Bob Dylan. The Cure and The Smashing Pumpkins.
The lineup — Freddy Aritonang. Rabindra Wisatrya. Mikael Mirdad, Inu, and Hertri Nur Pamungkas — has remained unchanged throughout the band’s history. The reissue of their album A Voyage to the Velvet Sun also pays tribute to its creators. who passed away last year.
The compilation showcases their neo-acoustic optimism that reflects the burgeoning global economy in the turn of the century. From the cartoon spaceship futurism of their album cover to the bossa nova rhythms and bright melodies of “Mentari. ” this is a hidden gem of turn-of-the-century Indonesian indie pop.
This compilation, which spans their 2006 and 2007 releases on Nanaba Records. is a time capsule of Indonesia’s ’90s indie pop scene and the era of post-collegiate youth culture that followed it.
While many of the musicians on this record have moved on to other projects. they left a lasting legacy in their wake.
Themilo Band Pop Indonesia
